OBBE VAN DER WEIDE (1996)

An orchid mimics the pollinator it seeks to attract. In a similar gesture, Obbe's work manipulates human
bodily attributes to draw in the viewer.

Obbe's practice explores the transformation of mental states into physical form. Rooted in a sense of alienation,
the sculptures embody a dissatisfaction with the impact of digital commerce on both mind and body. By
appropriating contemporary commercial techniques and applying nostalgic, seductive colour palettes, Obbe
creates an appealing surface: an inviting skin; for his mental embodiments.
Within this body of work lies a compelling duality; the emotionally expressive dissociated core encased in a

commercially attractive shell. This contradiction serves as a metaphor for the contemporary condition humaine.

This subject emerged from Obbe’s personal search for the deeper motivation behind his creative practice.
Over time, it has evolved into a defining thread throughout his work. The installation A Shattered Body
(2022), presented at SBK Sprouts Young Talents, marked a significant point of departure in this ongoing
inquiry.

Obbe’s work begins with expressive sketches; rapid marks in charcoal and pencil. These initial, tactile

impressions are then translated into the digital realm through 3D modeling. In this virtual space, Obbe merges

enlarged visual references into a hybrid body: a new sculptural entity.
The next phase is materialization. The form is 3D printed in polylactide or synthetic resin, after which the
surface is sanded, painted, and lacquered. Through this process, Obbe preserves the raw, spontaneous energy
of the original sketch within a polished and refined final embodiment.
